Wilderness Elk Drop Camp

Experience Wilderness Elk Drop Camp

If you’re searching for a thrilling hunting experience, our unguided drop camp services offer a great opportunity to explore the backcountry and pursue your hunting goals. A typical trip lasts eight days, including a pack-in day, six hunting days, and a pack-out day.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS EXCITING HUNTING ADVENTURE

Success rates for muzzle and rifle drop camps typically range from 50% to 75% on bulls, weather permitting. Archery drop camp hunters typically spot elk daily and are likely to take shots. Most drop camp groups see a few 300″ B&C class bulls. Success depends on hunting early every morning, hunting hard, keeping a positive attitude, and the weather.

Drop camps are booked with a maximum of four hunters, and the group may split the drop camp fee between them. Our services include a fully-supplied camp, directions to the appropriate trailhead, riding horse on the pack days, and packing of personal gear, weapons, and game. We’ll provide a packing list for recommended personal gear and equipment.

Camp and Equipment

Our camp comes with all the necessary gear you need to make your trip comfortable and worry-free. You’ll have access to a 12′ x 18′ wall tent, small storage tent, wood stove, Coleman cook stove, propane heater, table, four stools, sleeping pads, cots, pots, pans, utensils, silverware, cups, glasses, dish soap, dish rags/towels, 5-gallon water containers, solar shower bag, water filter, lantern and mantels, ax, shovel, saw, hammer, fuel, game bags, two topographic maps, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and trash bags.

Hunters are responsible for keeping firewood and water stocked, as well as supplying food and paper goods. This includes Ziplocks, paper towels, paper plates, paper bowls, toilet paper, etc. Please follow these guidelines for food:

  • Refrigerated food should be packed and split evenly by weight in two 48-quart coolers with a block of ice in each cooler.

  • Larger sized coolers or YETI-style coolers will NOT fit in our horse panniers.

  • Dry goods, dry milk, paper goods, and canned goods should be brought to the trailhead in grocery bags or boxes so we can re-pack these goods in our containers for transport to the camp.

  • Excessive amounts of alcohol, soft drinks, and other liquids are too heavy and fragile and will NOT be packed in.

  • Bottled water is not needed.

Extra camping gear is not needed and will not be packed in unless prior arrangements have been made with the outfitter. Do not bring cooking gear, sleeping pads, or any other camping gear except your sleeping bag. Hunters will not be packed out until the cook stove and cookware are clean.

Each hunter should bring four separate items to be packed in: a weapon, sleeping bag in a stuffsack, a daypack and a duffel bag.

GUIDELINES

To ensure safety and a successful hunt, drop camp groups must follow a few guidelines:

  1. Call us via sat phone immediately after you have a game animal down. Sat phone rentals are available here.
  2. All harvested game must be located where horses can reach it. Horse accessible means near a trail, in an open area, or in timber that is not too full of deadfalls.
  3. Game should be quartered and partially boned (except for the ribs, it is illegal in Colorado to leave edible portions of meat in the field) with evidence of sex naturally attached to at least one quarter.

We’ll conduct a conference call orientation before your trip to review all requirements.
