Shiras Moose Hunting in Colorado

If you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding hunting experience, Colorado’s public lands and private ranches offer some of the best opportunities for Shiras moose hunting. Our hunts are conducted in units 6, 7, 8, 16, 17, 19, 191, 20, and 29, and are tailored to meet the needs and preferences of each hunter.  We can sometimes outfit/guide in other units after approval of a special request to the USDA Forest Service or by working with another outfitter. A few of our units border the unhunted Rocky Mountain National Park.

UNMATCHED MOOSE HARVESTING POSSIBILITIES

Our units in Colorado have some of the biggest Shiras moose in North America. Harvesting a bull with 40-50 wide antlers is a possibility. Bulls over 40 in width will often make the B&C minimum of 155. Our hunters have taken many bulls that make the P&Y and B&C record books, including, at one time, the new #4 B&C and the new #1 SCI. These were some of the largest Shiras Moose taken in 50 years. At one point, our hunters had taken six of the top ten moose ever taken in Colorado. Since we started guiding moose hunters in 1997, our hunters have taken several bulls scoring over 180 B&C. We have guided many of the Governor’s Tag hunters and no other outfitter has more moose experience than us. On our elk hunts, we see moose daily.

HUNTING SERVICES

Our hunts include a 1:1 hunter-to-guide ratio, six hunting days, lodging, meals, transportation during the hunt, game packing, caping of the trophy, preseason scouting, and recommendations for game processors and taxidermy. You can expect comfortable lodging and hearty meals served for breakfast and supper, with sack lunches taken into the field each day.

LICENSE APPLICATION PROCESS

The draw system for moose is similar to the Colorado sheep/goat system (three preference points is the maximum you can obtain). However, after accruing three preference points, your application will have a better chance of drawing each year as weighted points are assigned. We recommend non-residents apply for units 6 or 7 and watch for the occasional nonresident tag offered in units 20/29 because of the large bulls available. Residents apply in unit 19, 20, 6, 16, or 7.
